Have you always been a tattoo artist/ How did you get into it?
I've always has an interest in art and tattooing. Currently I'm working as a handmade jewellery designer and a photographer, but I've been interested in tattoo culture since I was young and naturally made many tattooist friends. Soon I started getting tattoos and found my way too hand poke.
What was it like the first time you put needle and ink to skin?
I have had many tattoos, but my first hand poke tattoo was on my thigh. Needless to say, I did it myself. I wasn't nervous or concerned in particular because I saw my tattooist friends 'work process'. Similarly to a painting, once it was completed, it gave me a big thrill.
Do you have any memorable/ funny stories you can tell?
During the process, I usually talk with my guests about their lives. We talk on a variety of topics from private stories to philosophical ideas. It is meaningful experience for me because when I talk with them, I can take a brief look into their lives. It's hard to bring up a story about my guest's life here, but the point is that I feel and learn a lot from them.
Why do you prefer hand-poking to machine tattooing?
Things that are disappearing from modern society have their own nostalgia and longing. If we don't preserve, we will never feel them again. So I cherish them my own way.
One of that is doing by hands without a machine. Such as hand poke.
What would you recommend to someone who wanted to start tattooing?
Everyone has different tastes and different styles. I draw merely what I want to draw and tattoo those who want that style of tattoo.
Do you have any tips or tricks when it comes to hand poke tattooing?
I think a constant and quick movement is important. I practice using my wrist everyday. There are no special tips or tricks. Only practice will make it perfect.
So Single Needle Tattoo Kits, I believe that home tattooing is inherently risky, but people have, and will continue to tattoo themselves, therefore making a safe and affordable kit is the way forward... What's your take on this?
I agree with you. However, it may cause many problems if beginners have no knowledge of the skin and sanitation.
